Dear Decorator… Home Decorating is Hard! How Can I Stay Motivated When I Feel Overwhelmed Or Stuck?

dear decorator Mar 13, 2023

Dear Abby, I mean Wendy & Lyndsay

Why does decorating seem so hard?

I’m great at my career… but I can’t seem to stay motivated on my decorating projects.
I get started then I start second-guessing myself so much I never move ahead.

Any ideas?

Signed,

Unmotivated Mary

Dear Mary,

This is Lyndsay - I’m responding to you because I’m the Queen of second-guessing myself.

I tell myself I’m just being careful… but the truth is staying motivated as a busy career Mom can be overwhelming.

We have a number of tools to help you out - but I wanted to give you some simple practical advice I
use to stay on track.

I wish it sounded more magical… but these suggestions have let me get one room after another that I love.

I hope they help you too,

Lyndsay & Wendy

How Decorating Can Be Hard...
How To Get or Stay Motivated
When You Feel Overwhelmed Or Stuck

Working on a decorating project by yourself can be HARD!

If you’re like me, you end up second-guessing yourself so much you get stuck.
Or
Worse yet, you end up asking the wrong people for opinions. And everything looks disjointed and
piecemeal… instead of coordinated.

I’m not a psychologist or a motivational expert like Tony Robbins.
But I’ve dealt with these problems myself.

Wendy and I have helped 1000’s of women get on the right track.

Break your project into small parts and tasks:

  • Thinking about the whole project at once can be overwhelming. So break things down into smaller tasks that are more manageable. This will make it easier to stay motivated and make progress.
  • In this short video, you’ll learn the 5 Phases that every decorating project goes through. And how you can use them to organize your project into manageable steps.

Set Mini-Goals with a Deadline:

  • It feels great to cross something off your To Do list.
  • And it motivates us to keep going.
  • I try to accomplish 3 things a week - whether I do them all on a Saturday or spread them out through the week. Having small achievable goals makes everything easier.

Motivate Yourself with a Reward for The Little Things:

  • Rewarding yourself when you cross off a “To Do” item - really works.
  • Neuroscientists say it gives us a dopamine rush. I’m not sure if it's a rush - but when I’m having my chocolate as a reward for picking out paint colors - it sure feels good. LOL

Celebrate Your Achievements:

  • I've learned that as a busy Mom and DIY home decorator - I need to Celebrate Progress!
  • When I move from one Design Phase to the next I have a celebration. Because it's a milestone in a long journey.

Get Support:

  • We’ve found that every project seems to work better when you have people in your corner, supporting you.
  • It's more motivating when you can get good advice and knowledgeable second opinions.
  • Wendy and I thought this was so important we created a Private Facebook Group for it.
  • Every Monday we start by helping members create their mini-success plan for the week.
  • Every Friday we celebrate the successes you’re had for the week.

We call it the Haven Design Lounge.
