Dear Decorator… How The Heck Do I Find The Time To Decorate?

dear decorator Mar 13, 2023

Dear Abby, I mean Wendy & Lyndsay

How the heck do you find time to decorate?

Whenever I try to get started I get overwhelmed with all the BIG PICTURE decisions I have to make.
I jump from one to-do list to another - get frustrated and give up.

I feel like I’m stuck in quicksand.
And worried I’ll never get the room I want.

Is there a way to decorate my home, stay sane, and not neglect my life and family?

I just want to make consistent progress.

Stuck Sally

Dear Stuck Sally,

You’re right, focusing on the BIG PICTURE decisions all at once - is impossible.

We teach our members and clients how to create mini-successes.

It feels great knowing you’ve accomplished something and can cross it off your list.

Actually, there's a real science behind it.

Take a look at this article.

Suffering from Home Decorating Overwhelm?
How Using 10-Minute Micro-Goals Helps Busy Women
Eliminate Overwhelm, Get 10x More Done
And Feel Great About Their Progress

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when taking on a home decorating project.

You may have big dreams of a new look in your living room, but the idea of tackling all the details can
be overwhelming.

Especially if you are a working woman and/or a mom with endless responsibilities.

But there is another way — breaking it down into achievable micro-goals.

The idea is simple:

Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the task of transforming your home, focus on achievable
micro-goals worthy of celebration.

Start with things you can accomplish in 10 minutes.

  • Studies show that setting micro-goals can rewire your brain by increasing dopamine levels each time one is set and achieved.
  • Completing a task, no matter how small, can give you the feeling of accomplishment that will encourage you to keep working towards your goal.

If you are unsure how to start setting up micro-goals, start with the question:

“What is one thing I could do today - in 10-15 minutes…
That will make my home better or move my project ahead?

Then write it down - that’s your micro-goal today.

Each time you check one off, stop to appreciate your accomplishment.

Here’s WHY!

  • Studies show that setting micro-goals can rewire your brain by increasing dopamine levels each time one is set and achieved.
  • According to Psychology Today, “everything from making your bed to doing all the dishes will give you the ‘ding-ding-ding’ feeling of having completed a task.
  • Neurobiologically the satisfaction of completing a task creates internal rocket fuel that
energizes you to keep working towards your larger goal.”
  • Harvard Business Review researchers found that making small strides toward big progress
can actually increase a person’s happiness.
  • “The more frequently people experience that sense of progress, the more likely they are to be
creatively productive in the long run,” the article states.
  • It doesn’t matter if you are working toward a major scientific breakthrough or simply want to make strides toward living a healthier life, tiny wins can make a big difference in how you feel and perform.
